The Grand Banks 42 Classic's timeless lines and strong reputation, demonstrated by resale value, makes it a smart investment in cruising.

Arctic Dream is an elegant yacht, hand-built in the traditional method by skilled craftsmen, balancing rugged construction with fine finishing. The seaworthy hull form is proven, and as one gains experience on board, the feeling is built up; one of respect and security.

This design set the standard for almost four decades. It is intelligent, well-proportioned, and provides a fine sense of comfort, style and good sense.

Peace of mind comes from smart equipment choices, access for maintenance, and tested installations yielding remarkable reliability.

In production from 1966 to 2005, with over 1,550 hulls built, the Grand Banks 42 remains the most successful trawler design ever produced. The 42 Classic is a model often copied, but never duplicated. It is a magnificent example of how Grand Banks Yachts has blended thoughtful design, safe passage making, comfortable living and exquisite craftsmanship.

Relax in comfortable spaces inside, with full views of the harbour when the weather is cool or when privacy is desired. Or in the open areas of the flybridge on warm days at cruise or at anchor.

There are signature GB pieces throughout Arctic Dream, including the teak steering wheels, teak bar, the classic and functional yacht table, teak handrails, and teak parquet floors.

Since new, Arctic Dream has had six owners. Each have provided the best care, kept on top of maintenance, and updated systems. She has been sheltered in a shed by her current owner since 2016. And when not in her shed, previous owners have kept her protected with the full winter Lohman cover.

Throughout

Grand Banks' textbook tri-cabin layout provides a versatile separation of spaces between owners and guests; with the owners' cabin aft, the guest cabin forward, and the living space between.

This classic layout is well-suited for a cruising couple, with ample room for guests.

Boarding port or starboard is an easy step up with foot holds and handles in just the right places. And from the stern, the wide swim platform, perfectly situated to get in and out of the tender, has teak steps up to the afterdeck.

Enter the salon though side doors from the port or starboard side decks. The helm is forward to starboard, the bar behind that, the galley to port, the guest cabin forward, and the owners' cabin aft.

There is liberal use of hand-selected teak throughout the interior, hand-built by some of the best craftsmen in the business. The finish is a soft, satin varnish.

The owners' aft cabin features a queen-size walk-around berth (80" x 60"). Starboard of the bed is the night table and storage lockers. To port is another night table vanity with bench, more storage drawers. Forward in the cabin, at the foot of the bed is a double hanging locker.

There are overhead lights, reading lights, a companionway to the after deck, and opening windows with screens and custom curtains.

The private ensuite head has a separate stall shower, quiet Vacuflush toilet, storage lockers, and opening port lights.

The forward guest cabin is a large V-berth with hanging locker, drawers, overhead hatch, opening port lights, reading lights, and a private ensuite head with shower, quiet Vacuflush toilet, and storage lockers.

  • new mattresses in both cabins (2018)
Salon

The salon is a favourite place to entertain, or to just sit and watch the world go by through expansive windows with 360 degree visibility. The large windows are sized and situated for all aboard, whether sitting our standing, to enjoy the ocean vistas.

On the starboard side, there is an L-shaped settee with extra thick upholstery, storage under, and a proper teak Grand Banks yacht table with secret storage. Across and to port is a lounging settee and Sigmar diesel fireplace, and teak storage cabinet with TV.

Tucked under the table are two GB chairs to draw up for entertaining a slightly larger crowd.

There is the ubiquitous and necessary GB bar with fold out teak flap with Corian surface, and bottle and glass storage, all finished in hand rubbed teak.

  • new salon upholstery (2020)
  • updated LED lighting
  • reading lights
  • both salon doors refinished 2021
Galley

The galley is to port, forward of the side deck door. There is plenty of work space for preparing meals, ample and efficient storage, and is handy to the salon and helm.

Plenty of windows and efficiently conceived storage and preparation space makes the L-shaped galley a delight to work in.

The helm is directly opposite the galley, just forward of the salon, and operator and guests can be nicely engaged with each other.

Flybridge

Steps up from the port side deck lead to the flybridge with superb outdoor living space. There is not only a complete helm station with all the appropriate navigation and instruments, but a spacious entertaining and lounging space with aft-facing seating under the bimini, as well as the optional L-settee with teak hi-lo table.

  • new bimini on new 1-1/4” stainless steel tubing (2020)

Main Deck

Grand Banks are designed with active boating in mind. Their yachts have wide walk-around decks, with tall railings and a beefy gunnel, to ensure safety and confidence while moving around the boat, even during rough weather.

For effortless boarding and line handling, there are gate openings port, starboard and aft. As noted, there are port and starboard doors from the side decks to the salon and lower helm, as well as a door from the master stateroom to the after deck. Movement throughout is unencumbered and flowing.

The teak clad decks provide a superior nonskid surface, and Arctic Dream's are in excellent order.

All the teak trim is in perfect condition, and all exterior brightwork has been sanded to bare wood, sealed, and built up with numerous fresh coats of varnish. Windows and frames show no signs of moisture ingress or leaking.

Electrical System

The AC and DC systems service the vessel through circuit breaker panels, which are well-organised and properly labelled. Batteries are charged via the alternators while underway, or by the genset or shore power as needed. Arctic Dream is considered a "quiet boat" in that the genset is not needed for powering a cabin heat supply or for operating the propane stove and oven. The genset is ready as needed for higher power loads or battery charging when away from shorepower. Lighter AC loads are taken care of by the Trace inverter.
