The GB 42 Classic is a model often copied but never duplicated. It is a superb example of how this hugely successful yacht builder can blend thoughtful design, safe passage making, comfortable living, and exquisite craftsmanship.
There are signature GB pieces throughout Marengo, from the teak rimmed steering wheels at both helms, the classic and functional GB yacht table, teak chart storage, teak handrails, and teak parquet floors.
Subsequent owners have ensured a proper maintenance schedule, updated systems, and added their personal touches.
With private spaces, and open living, this classic tri-cabin layout is wonderfully versatile for cruising families, for two couples, or for a cruising couple with room for guests!
The owner's cabin is aft of salon and down a few steps. This cabin features a queen-size walk-around berth (80" x 60"). Starboard of the bed is the night stand with four drawers and two very large sliding teak doors accessing lots more storage, almost the full length of the cabin. There is another night stand to port with three drawers as well as an aft-facing desk, which can be used as a vanity or an office. There are eleven more lockers on this side of the cabin. Forward is another hanging locker with a large shelf above for a TV should it be desired.
The aft cabin also has its own private head, with a quiet electric Tecma fresh water toilet and a separate shower stall, with a dedicated sump and pump.
Air conditioning, while plugged into shorepower.
The forward guest cabin with a large double V-berth is down a few steps forward of the salon. Its hanging locker is to port and private access to ensuite head with integrated shower, a quiet Tecma fresh water toilet, wash basin and storage lockers is to starboard. This shower also has a dedicated sump and pump.
Under these stairs is alternate access to the engine and mechanical space.
The tri-cabin salon, located between the cabins, is gained via the port or starboard doors to the side decks. The salon is expertly finished in signature Grand Banks teak joinery, and is bright, spacious and airy. Whether guests are seated or standing, all the windows are at just the right level to bring in the ocean visas and fresh air! Most open, and are screened. Floors throughout are parquet teak.
To starboard is the L-shaped with updated extra-thick upholstery, storage under, a teak Grand Banks hi-lo drop leaf table. And to port, a large storage cabinet with a freezer. The bar is to starboard, forward of the salon settee with the ice maker and glassware storage.
The galley is to port, forward of the portside side deck door. There is plenty of work space for preparing meals, good refrigeration as well as dry storage for extended voyages, and the area is handy to the salon and helm to keep operator and guests engaged with cooks, and vice-versa.
The lower helm is to starboard with a door to the side decks, large signature GB teak steering wheel, large bench seat with storage under, and a well-designed layout of instruments, controls, and systems monitoring. The teak bench is a somewhat rare and useful factory option. It has been re-upholstered in durable and elegant Ultra-leather. Storage under in a large cabinet for such things as all ships documents and manuals.
The flybridge is accessed via teak steps from the port side deck. A stainless railing provides stability while underway. The bench seating is fore- and aft, leaving lots of deck space for other lounging furniture and a deck box.
All Grand Banks are renown for wide side decks, providing safe and easy crew movement fore- and aft, with a beefy gunnel and tall railings. For easy boarding and line handling, there are openings port, starboard and aft. As noted, there are port and starboard doors from the side decks to the salon and lower helm, and there is a door from the after deck to the master cabin.
The floor opens up in four sections to reveal the engines and machinery area. The GB 42, fitted with twin Ford Lehman 120s, boasts a spacious engine room with plenty of space for all systems, spares and tools, and room to work.
Motive power is via twin Ford Lehman 120 diesel engines - proven, and economical. Cruise at 8 knots, consume a proximately 13.5 litres per hour, giving a range of 1,345 nautical miles.
