Tony Fleming once confided that he had our waters in mind when he conceived the Fleming design. And since the initial launch in 1986, the reputation has grown world wide as the finest cruising yacht in her class. The model maintains her traditional lines, and has evolved through continual refinement by a builder whose mission statement is to constantly extend the firm’s collective knowledge and with each hull, “build the best boat we know how”, always striving towards the Ultimate Cruising Yacht.
Sun Drummer is the standard Fleming 55 layout with three-staterooms and two heads, with a broad cockpit, an inviting salon, a refreshingly large and functional galley. Up steps from the salon to the pilothouse, and then to a flybridge with direct access. Or down steps from the salon to the accommodations area.
Board the cockpit via a transom gate from the swim platform, or via inward swinging doors in the bulwarks to the side decks. The transitions from the dock to the boat, and indeed throughout the boat, are purposefully effortless with only slight steps up or down.
From the cockpit, enter the salon through double sliding doors. There is a settee to port, cabinetry to starboard. The galley is integral and spacious, occupying the full beam with U-shaped counter to port, with refrigeration and coffee station to starboard.
Up stairs from the salon and galley to the pilothouse with helm seat, guest settee, port and starboard doors to the side decks, and stairs up to the flybridge with upper helm, dinette, settee, and boat deck.
Also from the salon / galley, stairs down lead to the accommodations area with a privacy door separating this area from the activity in the galley or salon. Three staterooms and two heads are down stairs and forward.
There is hydronic heat and reverse cycle air conditioning throughout the boat, with independent controls in each zone.
All salon, pilothouse, stateroom and exterior upholstery was renewed by Royal City Bedding, renown for quality marine work, along with the custom carpets throughout. All interior and exterior lighting updated to LEDs including running lights and nav lights.
A companionway leads down from the salon and galley area directly to the accommodations area. This purposeful design has proved to be so desirable over many years in the Fleming 55 and allows an easy and convenient flow of traffic through the boat, eliminating the need for guests to transit up and down stairs through the pilothouse to access the cabins and heads. It also contributes to the vessel’s lower centre of gravity, improving comfortable motion in a seaway.
Moving forward, the arrangement provides guest bunks to starboard, laundry to starboard, a VIP guest cabin to port, a shared guest head to starboard, and a master stateroom forward with its private en-suite head. The accommodations are dressed with teak trimmed Formica, and offers great comfort and convenience without any steep stairs to negotiate.
Laundry is located in the accommodations hallway behind a sliding pocket door.
Master Stateroom
The master stateroom forward includes a queen island berth with two skylights. Ample storage is accomplished via large his and hers hanging lockers, cabinets and drawers. The upper areas are trimmed in teak to enrich the cabin, and a bookshelf is fitted around the hull, port and starboard. A large cavity underneath the bed is accessed through gas assist struts lifting the bed.
Master Head
There is an ensuite head, private to the stateroom with a generous shower stall, three large lockers, mirrored medicine cabinet, and full length mirror on the door.
VIP Stateroom Port
The port stateroom has twin berths with a teak side table and five large storage drawers underneath the berths. More storage is provided through a large hanging locker, a bureau of drawers, and bookshelves.
Guest Stateroom Starboard
The starboard stateroom features a lower bunk with a night vanity, dressing mirror and a slide-out upper berth. A hanging locker, drawers, and bookshelves provide ample storage.
Guest / Day Head
The guest / day head is across from the guest cabin. It is trimmed in teak, generous in size, well-lit and well-ventilated, with excellent storage and a separate shower stall.
From the spacious aft deck, which seems to flow out of the salon, enter double sliding doors into the sumptuous and richly furnished salon, artistically finished in teak throughout. Bar cabinet to port, a generous L-settee forward to the galley, and hi-low teak table for dining or cocktails. Built-in cabinetry across from the settee features abundant storage and an entertainment centre.
The galley is forward of the salon, and is the full width of the yacht with abundant preparation and storage space. The U-shaped work area to port is efficient with exceptional storage in upper and lower cabinets. To starboard a full size double door refrigerator / freezer and a teak cabinet for galley ware.
The operational heart of the yacht, Fleming 55 features a pilothouse which closely resembles the bridge of a much larger vessel. Fleming created a dedicated place from which the boat is piloted and controlled without any distractions from other on-board activities. The pilothouse is still only three steps up from the salon and galley.
Specially designed removable consoles provide ample room for a full range of modern electronic equipment without intruding on the full range of engine instrumentation. Electronics are detailed in that section below. Overhead consoles provide additional space. There is also a proper chart area with drawers and a chart light. Both AC and DC electrical panels swing out to provide easy access to wiring connections and the inside of the flybridge console is accessed through a swing-out bookcase. The captain has their own helm seat, and an adjacent raised L-shaped settee and table provide a comfortable social area with excellent visibility through the side and forward windows.
Visibility forward and to port and starboard is excellent, and the two sliding doors open to the wide, well protected side decks. The standard traditional teak and holly sole continues. There are large drawers and working space for charts, cruising books, and navigation instruments, binoculars and everything else a crew needs to chart and follow a safe course. A large stainless steel teak-trimmed destroyer wheel fits the ambiance of this ultimate cruising yacht.
The flybridge is easily accessed primarily via four gentle steps up from the pilothouse or by ladder from the cockpit. The two-seater upper helm bench is located to port, and provides excellent visibility particularly in close quarters and bustling harbours. The electronics console houses an array of engine instrumentation and navigation hardware, detailed in that section below, with easy access via a hinged bookcase behind the settee in the pilothouse. The starboard side of the flybridge features a U-shaped settee with a large fixed table while the port side consists of an additional seating area and access to the dumbwaiter from there galley below.
Aft of the flybridge is the working area, which carries the tender, optional liferaft, and davit system, with ladder access to and from the cockpit.
In common with all Flemings, the hull is hand laid solid fiberglass reinforced with a grid of stringers and frames. Vinylester resin is used below the waterline with further protection provided by epoxy barrier coats. A reasonable five foot draft allows for Bahamas cruising while ensuring that the running gear is protected by a full-length keel which is foam filled and glassed across the top to isolate it from the hull.
In 2015, the bottom was soda blasted and fresh epoxy barrier coats applied along with regular coats of bottom paint as needed.`
Special attention has been paid to the ease and safety in which the heavy duty ground tackle is set and retrieved. The anchor platform accepts two anchors, each of which can be controlled by a handheld unit at the platform or by windlass controls at the pilothouse and flybridge stations.
On deck she has the familiar walk-around decks we are used to seeing on all the Flemings and the high bulwarks and Portuguese Bridge provide security for both children and pets. Docking controls are located in the cockpit, starboard of the salon doors. Four gasketed and lockable hatches provide access to the engine room and spacious lazarette.
The cockpit is spacious yet intimate to the ocean around, and like all outside spaces on the Fleming 55, safe and secure. The teak caprail, clear of any fittings, is broad and extends to the caprails leading forward. Multiple coats of varnish gleam. The cockpit is accessed by the wide, fiberglass swimgrid, through the transom gate. Note the inward-swinging side gates for ease of access to each side deck or for stepping to the dock to secure a breast line.
The navigation systems and electronics were chosen and laid out for ease of use, redundancy of system, and dependable operation. The core system is Raymarine, and was updated with new plotters and radar approximately 2015.

The Fleming electrical system is known to be a robust design, and remarkably friendly to use.
110VAC and AC220V and 24VDC panels, with circuit protection, are located in the pilothouse. Part of the AC panel is devoted to lighter loads which can be powered by the inverter. AC power is provided by fore or aft shore connections, by the generator, and by battery through the inverter. DC power is provided by banks of batteries.
The engine start banks also service the thruster.
Note that the AC system includes isolation transformers. There is one AC inlet at the bow, and one at the stern.
The batteries are charged via heavy duty alternators on the engines of 240 Amp 24V each when one or both engines are running, or via the charger from genset or shore power. Another alternator on the genset charges the genset battery
The engine room is accessed from a hatch aft of the salon doors through the outside leading down to the well laid out engine room. Systems and engineering are a notable feature of all Fleming Yachts whose philosophy has always been to choose only the best equipment available for the job and make sure that it is readily accessible for maintenance. To achieve the extremely low sound and vibration that Flemings are known for, Aquadrive systems transfer the thrust directly to the hull and the isolated engine can sit on soft engine mounts. The ride is remarkably quiet and vibration free.
The lazarette houses the water tanks, steering gear and engine mufflers, while also leaving ample room for storing cruising gear such as spare anchors, rode, lines, fishing gear, fenders, and parts. Additionally, all battery isolation switches are accessible from outside the engine-room.
Motive power is by twin venerable Caterpillar 3208 TA diesel engines at 435 hp each. The engines are fresh water cooled through heat exchangers with CAT air filters on intakes and coolant recovery tanks.
