Elements of this Bayliner 4788 Pilothouse

This is a fine example of the supremely popular 4788. The pilothouse design is well suited to cruising our waters with her superior visibility, enviable layout, and superb value. Boat house kept most of her life, and smart, involved ownership results in a fine yacht in above average condition.

Throughout Zenyatta

The Bayliner 4788 was and is a winning design. They feature a wonderful balance of living and accommodation spaces, a separate pilothouse, an inviting flybridge, and a generous foredeck and cockpit.

Board the vessel to the cockpit via the transom door from the swim platform. Enter via the sliding door to the salon; a large space, nearly full-beam, encompassing the adjacent galley.

Down four steps forward of the salon to the accommodations area with three cabins, two heads, laundry, and engine room access.

Up four steps from the salon to the pilothouse, and up again to the flybridge.

  • updated LED lighting throughout
  • Espar hydronic forced air furnace throughout (new 2019)
  • Baseboard electric heat system
  • Denon stereo in salon
  • Fusion stereo on flybridge
  • Wilson cell booster (2012)
Accommodations

The master stateroom is forward with centreline (almost) queen berth, opening port lights, opening overhead hatch, direct and indirect lighting, reading lights, storage under berth, in two hanging lockers, and in several drawers and shelves.

The private ensuite head has a stall shower in a small tub, Tecma marine toilet, exhaust fan, basin, storage, and opening portlight.

There is a separate dressing area with a huge hanging locker, settee lounge, and storage drawers. This area can also be closed off and used as a private cabin with upper and lower bunks.

Moving aft towards the salon, on port, is the guest cabin, with double berth, hanging locker, storage cabinet, drawers, direct and indirect lighting, reading lights, and opening port light.

Opposite, across the hall is the guest / day head, with stall shower, exhaust fan, Tecma marine toilet, basin, and storage.

Salon

The salon is nearly full-beam:

  • L-shaped settee to starboard with storage under
  • Two occasional chairs to port, with cocktail table between
  • Storage in lockers all along the salon's port side
  • Pedestal table with opening leaves to convert it from a dining table for two or four to a larger table for dining a small crowd
  • Upholstered valance
  • Samsung Bluray player
  • Denon stereo system
  • KVH M5 satellite TV receiver (2013)
  • Wet bar with ice maker
  • Updated flatscreen TV (2014) with modified cabinet. This modified cabinet added an extra storage locker accessed from the galley.
Galley

The galley is to port, adjacent to the salon, and features all the appliances, working space and storage needed for the creative cook.

  • Corian counter top, with raised bar perfect for separating the workings of the galley to the salon, while entertaining
  • Under counter fresh water filter
  • Novakool RFU 9000 9 cubic ft refrigerator wth 2.5 cubic ft freezer (new 2015)
  • GE Spacesaver microwave oven
  • Force 10 propane three burner stove with oven
  • GE trash compactor
Pilothouse

Up four steps from the salon and galley is the pilothouse. The seat and console are on the centreline, with instruments, controls, and switches readily at hand.

The helmsperson can be joined by guests or watch mates in the settee which wraps the aft and port side of the pilothouse.

Port and starboard doors give access to the side decks and the foredeck. And give the helm superb visibility and a feeling of control when approaching a dock on either side.

The pilothouse design works so well because it affords the helm and the guests perfect views in almost every direction, whether enjoying the sea life, taking in the ocean vistas, or watching for logs!

Access to the flybridge is via stairs up from the pilothouse.

  • An array of navigation and communication equipment (details follow)
  • AC and DC systems control panel with storage drawer below
  • Additional storage in aft bulkhead cabinet
  • Textaline (one way see through) windshield covers
  • Settee aft and port, with storage under

  • Defrost fans

  • Spotlight control switch
Flybridge and Boat Deck

Up steps from the pilothouse, is the flybridge with the custom hard top and full enclosure.

The flybridge modification also involved moving the port settee aft about 18" to create a more comfortable and spacious seating area.  This realignment also allows the rear enclosure windows to line right up with the settee backs.

The upper helm is slightly to port, with instruments, engine controls, and controls for the windlass and spotlight.

The standard helm seat was replaced with a custom bench that can face forward for vessel operation, or, while at rest, aft to join guests.

The settee aft of the helm seat can accommodate quite a crowd of guests. There is a drinks fridge, wet bar, more storage under the settees, and access to the tender.

There is also a ladder down to the cockpit from the boat deck.

We see most 4788 owners store their tender facing forward but this one faces aft for good reason: The tender is larger than normal, with the bow overhanging the cockpit. The extra weight is offset by the engine being set forward. This arrangement gives more room for crew around the boat deck, makes launching and retrieving the tender easier, since the tender will now face forward once launched, and adds safety by changing the weight distribution.

  • custom FRP hard top with courtesy lighting (2017)
  • full enclosure for the flybridge with some panels, including the aft door, on sliders allowing these sections to neatly slide out of the way, rather than roll up (2017)
